PSU moves pubnet to NoCatAuth

I first heard this from Dave Jensen. Portland State University has a
campus wide wifi network called pubnet - essid 'pubnet.pdx.edu'. In the
past, I was never able to get a login page of any kind - probably due to
MAC filtering. I happen to be on campus and I tried again, up comes the
familiar nocat login prompt, with the nocat auth logo next to the PSU
logo.

Hi Jerry,

We no longer use the nocat system on campus. We've moved to the
centralized LWAPP solution from Cisco, which includes captive portal
functionality. Where and when did you get the nocat login page? This
should not be possible, as the system has been completely removed from
service.

Thanks,

Woops - didn't see this response. Disregard my earlier email. Thanks for
the clarification, Tamarack.

In case anyone else is curious, LWAPP (Light-Weight Access Point
Protocol) is a pending IETF standard, proposed by Airespace, a company
that was consumed by Cisco in 2005.

If there is an open-source implementation of LWAPP, I can't find it.

We just moved all of our APs over to LWAPP over winter break at Lewis
& Clark too. Except for our APs that had a REALLY old version of the
Cisco IOS, we were able to make most of the conversion without
needing physical access. There's some really neat features of the
wireless management tool including discovery and containment of rogue
access points, coverage hole detection and resolution, and "one
click" firmware updates of the APs. I look forward to seeing what
else it can do!

Take Care,

Matthew

Um. PSU has been using NoCatAuth for "pubnet" for several years now....?
Maybe "in the past" is a long time ago. AFAIK, they don't do MAC
whitelisting, but use your "Odin account" for authentication. Maybe
you're saying that it is open to the public now? That'd be really neat.
Last I talked with PSU IT/CAT folks (8 months ago?) they were lamenting
the instability of NoCat and were hoping to switch to something else.
So, um, I'm a bit confused -- perhaps you (or someone else) can clarify.
