These folks are having a get-together. If someone wanted to go give a
skillshare for PTP on some aspect(s) of community wireless networking,
that'd be really cool.

Volunteers?

I'd do it, but, you know, it'd be a hell of a commute.

On Saturday, November 17th from 3pm-5:30pm, we invite all to gather and
share skills, food and stories at the Multnomah County Central Library,
in the U.S. Bank Room. The library is located at 801 S.W. 10th Ave.

The gathering will offer workshops by facilitators of some of our
classes, as well as time to find out more about the Free School and get
involved. Most importantly, it will be chance for you to meet other
Portland folk interested in grassroots, empowering education! Bring a
dish to share if you can.

Workshops are still being added so its not too late to offer a
skillshare on ANYTHING! Check out website for a growing list and more:
portland.freeskool.org

Thus far we have confirmed:

Bicycle skills brought to you by the Bike Farm:
- Changing flats correctly
- Fitting your bike
- Truing a wheel
How to play the board game "Go"

I am wondering if we could teach a class, but on what specifically?
Yes, that's what I had in mind. Really, it'd be up to the teacher what
the topic should be (are you volunteering? :)). I can give some ideas
though:

* Building a Cantenna
* How to use our nodes are where they are
* A curious citizens guide to the Metrofi-debacle
* WiFi security: myths and best practices
* How to be a good neighbor and share your wifi
* General Q and A

Or, even without teaching a class it'd be useful if someone(s) went and
shook hands and let people know that PTP is interested in being part of
endeavors towards community-based education in Portland (it's like a big
part of the mission and stuff).

Tom Higgins emailed me off-list saying that he's tied up this weekend or
he'd otherwise go. So, can someone else step up? This is like tomorrow,
though, so it'd be good if someone volunteered quickly...

It is a good opportunity. Unfortunately, I am off-the-table
tomorrow, with an array of random things going on.

Actually, it turns out, I may have a window available between 2 and 5
in the afternoon.

OK, give me a call. It starts at 3pm and the coordinator at the freeskool said:

Otherwise, I think we might just break up the room into different
sections for different skills. That way people interested can just
come to check out things at their leisure. For this reason, if you
had any equipment / demonstrational materials or informational
materials to present, it would be a good idea to bring those too.

I'll go ahead and add you to the list. It would be a good idea to
describe a skill people would learn, as most would not understand what
"Personal Telco" means.

FWIW, here is a quick report on the freeschool event on Saturday.
Paul Leddy and I showed up. There were some bicycle people there too,
along with refreshments in the form of pastries, bagels, juice, etc.
We talked to several people at length. We had a buffalo client device
with a 9 dBi antenna which I intended to use to hook up to MetroFi
(they have skypilots on two corners of the Central Library building)
but, though I could see several MetroFi-Free networks, I was unable to
connect.

I guess I should thank MetroFi for letting me talk to in-person people
instead of wasting time connected to the internet. ;-)
